Colonel Lawrence Brown is currently the garrison commander for the Presidio of Monterey.

A military intelligence officer, Col. Brown’s previous assignment was at Special Operations Command South in Homestead, Florida, where he served as the director of intelligence since 2014. Prior to this, he was the NATO Training Mission – Afghanistan director of intelligence in Kabul from 2013-2014.

Upon earning a Master’s in Strategic Studies from the Army War

College in 2012, Col. Brown deployed to Pakistan for 11 months where he served as the director of operations for the Office of the Defense Representative, U.S. Embassy, Islamabad.

From 2009-11 he commanded the 532nd Military Intelligence Battalion in the Republic of Korea. Beforehand, Col. Brown was Chief, Analytical and Control Element for United States Army Europe for a year. From 2006-2008, he was the 66th Military Intelligence Brigade’s operations officer.

Col. Brown spent 2005-2006 in Afghanistan as the operations officer for the 165th Military Intelligence Battalion. From 2004-2005 he was a plans officer for the 1st Armored Division.

As a company grade officer from 1993-2000, Colonel Brown served in three different cavalry regiments: a scout platoon leader and troop executive officer in 2nd Cavalry Regiment where he deployed to Haiti, a squadron intelligence officer in 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, and the B Troop Commander in the 9th Cavalry Regiment, assigned to 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.

Commissioned a second lieutenant of infantry in June 1991, Brown was a ROTC graduate at California State University-Fullerton while earning an undergraduate degree in business from Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, CA. While attending university, Col. Brown also served in the Army California National Guard as a mechanized infantry squad leader. A California native, he enlisted in 1983 as a ranger infantryman, serving in 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment for four years.

Col. Brown completed two other Master’s programs, in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College, and in Military Arts and Sciences from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. His awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, and the United Nations and NATO medals. He has earned the Expert Infantryman’s Badge, Ranger Tab, Master Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, and Pathfinder Badge.
